PRObuilt Transaxle Freeway Flyer - Short Axle - 2300
The BEST way to enjoy the shifting experience and low RPMs at higher speeds in 1949 through 1965 Classic Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle and Karmann Ghia is with a PRObuilt Freeway Flyer Transaxle equipped with *OEM sized Short Axle/Short Spline Axles (SASS). *(It can fit others, see the Complete Details section for more information).
This transaxle is Perfect for the Cruiser application. Key features of this transaxle are the 3.88 Ring and Pinion, overdrive 4th, new synchros, bearings, and seals in a rebuilt SASS 12-volt platform. All transaxles from the PRO's are 12 volt and do not come with OIL. The PRO's recommend this oil from LAT or this on Amazon. You will need 3.5 quarts usually.
The PRO's offer a few different transaxles with varying lengths of the axle. This allows us to fit wheels with different offsets onto cars, whereas they wouldn't usually fit. So you should pick out your wheels first, run them by the PRO's to see what axle length makes sense, then choose a Cruiser application (Freeway Flyer) or Performance application (not racing but more aggressive driving). No Core is Needed.

VW Link Pin Torsion Leaves - 2400
Classic Volkswagen Type 1's have an axle beam up front, and inside that beam are Torsion Leaves. They are also known as Torsion Leaf, Torsions, Torsion Springs, Torsion Slats, Torsion Bars, or the OEM part number for the link pin application is 111411027. There is an upper and a lower needed for each vehicle.
Each tube houses eight leaves, four wide and four small, two on top and two on the bottom. They form a square shape.
One thing to remember when dealing with suspension is AGE. Since the ball joint suspension was born in 1949 (yes they were built earlier, chances are you don't have one of those), these torsion leaves can be up to 74 years old (2023) and have lost spring tension, causing the vehicle to sag over time. So although you might have a stock condition suspension set up, it is a certainty that your Classic VW has lowered over time.
Small note, the Classic Volkswagen Beetle had about six inches or 150mm of a gap between the top of the 165sr15 tire and the fender when it came off the showroom floor.
These torsions come from Volkswagen of Mexico and are NEW, not used. They are offered stock widths up to six inches narrower.

Each tube houses ten leaves, four wide and six small, three on top and three on the bottom. They form a hexagonal shape.
One thing to remember when dealing with suspension is AGE. 2 - 4 Inch Narrowed Link Pin Tie Rods - 2420
To get proper Ackerman, you need to have the right length of tie rods when you narrow your beam. It is not as simple as cutting your tie rods the amount you narrowed your beam. It's a math problem.
For reference, your steering box is not in the center of the beam. It is to the left here in the US. So the lengths of the tie rods play a major role in steering geometry. So, to not give away our secrets, let's just say we have done the math for you.
These tie rods are narrowed enough to allow for two to four inches of narrowed width on a 1949 through 1965 Type 1 Classic Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia. For the two inch application, you will have less threads showing on the tie rod ends and for the four inch, you will have more. Stock tie rods consist of part numbers 113415802B and 113415801.

Classic VW Type 1 Link Pin Drum Drop Spindles - 2431
A Good option for installing drop spindles on your 1949 through 1965 Classic Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle and Karmann Ghia for the link pin application is this set of DRUM drop spindles. It will lower your

Classic VW Type 1 Link Pin Adjusters - 2450
A good way to lower a Classic Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle or Karmann Ghia with link pin front
suspension (
1949 through 1965) is utilizing adjusters in the
center of the beam.
These adjusters will give you the ability to adjust your VW up and down a total of 7.5" when installed at 25 degrees up from parallel to the ground. This means you can go up to stock height at the highest setting and the ability to go down a total of 7.5", but you can set it anywhere you want within that range.
Do not believe the 50/50 garbage out there, it is a Band-aid idea that will only cause more harm. Your factory link pin suspension is designed to be at a stock height, with the arms at a 60 degree angle. The top arm is bottomed out on the stop, the stock shock is maxed out in extension and this is all assumed, that the factory torsions haven't lost any spring tension. (Theortically, if the 50/50 method was put in place with relaxed torsions, you are putting more stress on them to index them higher giving the vehicle an unstable ride. Would it lift it to stock height? Maybe. Would it be good advice to do this to keep your family safe? No.) Installing these adjusters at 25 degrees give you the best use of travel within the range of the factory working components.
There are three ways to lower your 1949 through 1965 Type 1. Good, Better, Best.
Good - Install these adjusters, based on budget and skill set
- no tech support
Better - Install an Ultimate Beam - Tech Support Included
Best - Install an assembled beam like the Stage 1 PRObuilt Beam - Tech Support Included

OEM PRObuilt Steering Box - 2480
The most often neglected part of the Classic Volkswagen Drive-Train is the Steering Box. The 113415061C, which is the factory OEM part number, is the most common steering box used. It will work with *All Type 1's, Type 3's, Type 181's and anything that came with a Ball Joint front suspension.
Adjusting the steering box with the adjustment on the top of the box is often over used. As a whole, the steering box is responsible to 40% of the steering wheel play/creep in the steering system. Crazy, right? There is SO MUCH MORE that is responsible for play/creep but we as consumers assume, the steering box is the reason. Let's get into the grease and bearings of the subject...
